General Flu Symptoms, High Risk Groups and Flu Prevention

The flu, also referred to as influenza virus, is a contagious viral infection causing respiratory illness when contracted. Its peak season is usually around October until May making it especially important to protect yourself during this period. Having underlying health conditions can put you at risk of developing more severe illness if you contract the virus.
Symptoms of the flu include:
fever
sore throat
body aches
coughing
Tiredness
Chills
Less common symptoms can include congestion, a runny nose and shortness of breath.
High Risk Groups
More serious complications can present in high-risk groups. These individuals are:
Older adults (ages 65 plus)
Pregnant individuals
Children ages 6 months up to 4 years
Individuals with the following health conditions:
Diabetes
Cancer
Anemia
Individuals with a BMI greater than 40
Renal disease
Cardiac or pulmonary disorders
Even if you do not fit into any of the high risk categories, it is highly advisable to receive the flu immunization in order to protect yourself and stay healthy during peak flu season.
Flu prevention
The best way to protect yourself is to get immunized against the flu. Maintaining hand hygiene with frequent hand washing and maintaining physical distance with those that are infected can help lower your chances of contracting the illness.
It is important to recognize that even if you receive the flu vaccine you may still contract the virus. However, the severity of your symptoms and illness will be milder. Generally it will take up to 2 weeks before the vaccine is most effective.
